‘Beatles ballroom’ transformation begins

Work to transform the city centre ballroom which famously hosted John Lennon’s wedding reception is underway.

Reece’s Ballroom on Parker Street is to be redeveloped into 91 studio suites and one-bedroom apartments under plans from property investment firm Property Frontiers.

The development, to be known as Parker Street Residences, will offer on-site security, bicycle storage, a 24/7 concierge service and access to gym facilities.

The scheme will also see the creation a new two-floor extension with the shops on the ground floor, including Superdrug, remaining.

Soft strip works have commenced, with the demolition and structural alterations of the building set to begin early next month

Reece’s Ballroom is the most iconic building owned by Reece & Sons. A popular social spot, Reece’s Ballroom included a dancehall, café and restaurant, until its closure in the 1980s.

One of the venue’s most famous hires was by John Lennon, who held his wedding reception there in 1962 after marrying his first wife, Cynthia Powell, mother to his son Julian Lennon.

Ray Withers, CEO of Property Frontiers, says: “It’s fantastic to see work beginning at Parker Street Residences.

“This building has such a rich history and I’m delighted to see this new chapter in its story getting underway.”

Work on the redevelopment is set to be completed in August 2017.
